I contacted Apple iTunes Support on their Support page; here is the answer I received from them.


Short Answer & Quick Solution: If your debit or credit card doesn’t work with the iTunes Store, use iTunes or App Store Gift Cards to make purchases online with iTunes and App Store to bypass credit card errors. (This is only if iTunes and App Store Gift Cards are available in your country.)

I’m sorry you have been getting an error message saying, “Your credit card was declined” when trying to update your debit card. I know how eager you are to update your credit card, and I am happy to assist you.

The iTunes Store has been unable to verify authorization from your financial institution. There are several possible reasons for this:

  1. Your financial institution’s servers have been busy. Consider trying again at another time.
  2. Your card is in trouble. Consider using a different card or contacting your financial institution to inform them of the problem.
  3. Your billing name or address does not match the address listed on your credit card statement. Any punctuation, abbreviation, or capitalization discrepancy can cause errors, which might prevent you from purchasing from the iTunes Store. If you moved or your zip code changed recently, ask your financial institution to ensure their records are up to date and match exactly what you are entering as your billing information. Please follow these steps to confirm or update your account information:

  1. Go to Apple’s My Info page: http://appleid.apple.com
  2. Choose your country and preferred language from the pop-up menus.
  3. Enter your iTunes Store account name and password, then click Log In (or Continue).
  4. On the My Info Welcome page, click Address Book on the left. You can confirm or edit your information there.
  5. Click Phone Numbers on the left. Please ensure the area codes and phone numbers are correctly entered in their respective fields.
  6. Click Save Changes.

Try placing an order on the iTunes Store. If the iTunes Store still cannot obtain authorization for your card, you won’t be able to make purchases with that particular card. You can use a different card or any other payment method in your country.

iTunes Gift Cards are another option. They are available in several denominations at various retailers in your area. They are also available at any Apple Store location, including the Apple Store online:

      uh buddy it doesn’t take debit cards, only credit cards.

    All my cards are valid and the info is correct on all of them, and I tried different cards again and still keep getting same error message.

    Well, apparently apple doesn’t want my money; it’s time to move on to amazon.com and other places to purchase music. Time to dump itunes too.

    I have been facing a similar problem. My Debit card has since been expired. But it’s not validating my new card . I have tried three valid cards, but reply is almost the same and Payment method is declined. I feel helpless. This is iPhone 6. Why it happens with such expensive mobile.

    Having the same issue, tried different cards and keep getting it is declined when I know there is money on them. How can I even update my apps? Why do we even need a pay option for a free app to update! I never understood this and think it is completely stupid. Like Facebook, Instgram etc that don’t have in app purchases…

    hi, this is happening to me, i’ve tried two different valid cards and they are both being declined.. i can’t even redownload apps i’ve once had or update any 🙁 hopefully it’s just the new update and it’ll get fixed but if not, then i have no clue

    I recently went through this issue, to save some people time here was my process. My support call person asked me to navigate to the edit payment page within the AppStore. There, she asked me to select “None” as the payment and select “Done” on the bottom of the page (you should receive an email notification saying your account details were changed). From there re-navigate to the payment page and add your card information and select “Done”.

    I still ended up having issues but that was due to the bank declining the $1 test payment Apple sends to ensure the fake is valid. So, if you’re still having issues reach out to your card provider.

    I FIXED MY ISSUE!! Christina’s comment above helped a lot. After 100 attempts using my Iphone and declined every time and not seeing a payment option within the App Store, I opened Itunes on my PC. Under account at the top, clicked View My Account. Clicked edit for Payment Type.
    After another failed attempt inputting card info…declined. ok fine, selected None. Click done.
    It accepted that and showed i had no card on file. Click edit for Payment Type again. Fill in card info, click done.
    It didn’t give me decline error but also didn’t change the screen. Ugh right? Rather than cancel, I clicked on View My Account. Page refreshes to Account Information and IT WORKED!! new card listed as payment type!!

    haha!!got my solution…go to apple.com in chrome or other browser and reach the payment editing page.once you reached,under the shipment address ,there is a check box to copy billing address.make sure to check that box and u r done.enter valid card info and save the changes.hope this helps. thank you..

    Second time it happens to me. First time resolved itself after 2 months. This time still trying and trying and nothing. My credit card in perfect order excepted by everywhere in the world only Apple store declines. PayPal the same. Cannot update and cannot even buy a free application. Tried to buy something and accrued debt but Apple store doesn’t allow me to pay for it. Now it complains first pay the debt or else. No way to do anything. And Apple is the “best and most expensive” company?

    One thing to try that worked for me when I had this problem is to go into settings and update your info through there rather than through the AppStore pop up on mobile.

    So I have same problems like you guys. I always purchased things in app store with my debit card but suddenly that card got declined. WTF? I asked both my bank and itunes, itunes said it’s the bank’s problem, but the bank said nothing’s wrong with their server or system. It’s so frustrating until I read Christina’s reply here! Thanks Christina!! Just edit your payment method to “none” (in apple website not in the app). And then re-input your card. Voilaaaa!!!

    I understand Apple is a tiny upstart company and I should keep my expectations regarding high tech purchasing in check but it’s hard to be patient when I can’t simply change over credit card info to buy music on a system designed for that purpose. I’ve tried the ‘none’ method and it did not work. My card is working fine everywhere else. On top of that I’m supposed to create an “Apple Account” when I already have an Itunes account. People tell me file sharing is a breeze. Makes you wonder…

    Hello. I am trying to install an app from the app store but it keeps asking me to complete my billing info, even though it’s a free app and I have made some previous purchases in app store the other days. But when I complete the billing info it says it is declined. What can I do to fix this? I’m looking forward for any suggestions. Thank you!

    **SOLVED**

    OK after several weeks banging my head against a brick wall and Apple’s pretty awful support it turns out, you get this message when trying to add a card, when you already owe money (iTunes or Apple store etc) AND there is not enough credit on the card to pay the debt…. for me was trying to use an account that only had $5 in it, but the kid had run up $11.96 of debt, everytime we try to add card, they try to take $11.96 and card gets declined…DOH! Go to iTunes and check your orders, see how much you owe and make sure there is enough in the account for the card you are trying to add. Simples
